Playing with knives

'Playing with Knives' started her DJ career in London, inspired by the music cultures of cities such as London, Chicago, Detroit, and New York. She quickly played in renowned clubs like Momo, SKETCH, Plastic People, Chiltern Firehouse, and 180 The Strand, where she shared the stage with a range of artists like Lil Louis, Theo Parrish, Idris Elba, Talib Kweli, Madlib, Sir Norman Jay, and Osunlade. She performed at after-parties for icons like Madonna and Dua Lipa, Damien Hirst, Michele Lamy, Marina Abramovic, and Mark Ronson, and her selector skills make her a celebrated figure in the London underground scene.

On Friday, 3rd May, she takes her place behind the decks at BIRD alongside Detroit Legend Marcellus Pittman – but let's first take a look inside her record bag!

  1. What was the first record or CD you ever bought?

Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F, with my pocket money when I was 8.

  • Which record have you been searching for a long time?

Many, especially a lot of house and techno records that I knew from the dance floor but didn’t know the names of. For example, Orbital – Midnight (Sasha Remix).

  • What is the ultimate love track for you?

Prince – If I Was Your Girlfriend.

  • You pay homage to the music from Detroit in your last Operator Show. How do you explain the magic of the music culture in this city and which 3 records best represent this magic?

I prefer to leave it to the Detroiters to explain the magic of their music culture, but one of the factors seems to be the extremely cold winters, which keep people indoors a lot with plenty of time to create.

I tried to musically capture a piece of that magic in my operator radio show.

Choosing just three records for this is impossible, but I can mention some genres: Motown, Rock (from MC5 to The White Stripes), Funk (Parliament/Funkadelic, Amp Fiddler), Electro (Sharevari, Cybotron/Model 500), Techno, Dilla, 3 Chairs.

With so many genres, you understand that three tracks simply aren't enough.

  • You and Marcellus Pittman have been friends for a while and you talk a lot about music. What is a typical Pittman dance floor anthem?

52nd Street – Can’t Afford (To Let You Go).

  • Which record will definitely be played by you on Friday?

Joint Venture – Master Blaster, I can't wait to hear it out loud! Perfect warm-up track.

  • Last but not least, what song is your guilty pleasure at the moment?

I find the concept of 'guilty pleasure' difficult because I'm never ashamed of a track I have chosen myself. If a track is good, it's good, and I don't care who made it. But what people might not expect from me is that I get very happy with Ice Spice – Actin a Smoochie.
